M102 – Blueprint Reading & Shop Math


This course is directed toward the most fundamental of skills including: Shop Math, Use of Blueprints/Drawings, and Job Planning and related safety issues.  The successful application of these skills in every day projects can be very advantageous to personnel in the mechanical maintenance field.  Combining this course with M-101, “Hand and Power Tools,” will give the successful attendee(s) the skills necessary to perform typical maintenance in a mechanically based environment.

(Recommended Prerequisites – M101 - Hand and Power Tools)


  1. The ability to read blueprints and drawings will aid in the basic skills of a maintenance mechanic.
  2. Learn basic shop math that will assist you in performing tasks in both maintenance and planning.


At the completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to apply basic math that might be needed to perform a maintenance activity: including Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Algebraic Equations.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to interpret geometrical dimensions and convert to usable numbers, given the application at hand.
  3. Identify symbols commonly found on blueprints and drawings.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to read piping diagrams, fluid power system diagrams, and machine prints.

Course Topical Outline

  • Day 1 – Shop math covering; fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, measurement, geometry, and the fundamentals of algebra.
  • Day 2 – Blueprint and Drawings, including common print reading symbols, general guideline to reading prints, piping system prints, fluid power system prints, and machine prints.
