This course is directed toward the most fundamental of skills including: Basic Mechanical Tools, Fasteners, Power Tools, and related safety issues. Selection of the correct tool and using that tool correctly and safely can be very important. For these reasons, this course is very advantageous to personnel in the mechanical maintenance field. Taking this course, along with M102 “Shop Math and Blueprint Reading,” scheduled immediately following the M101 presentation, will provide the successful attendee(s) with a solid maintenance skill base. (Recommended Prerequisites - None)

Objectives

At the completion of this course the participant will be able to:
  1. Given a task at hand, describe considerations to be used in the selection of hand tools.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge regarding the proper and safe use of hand tools.
  3. Describe the proper use of metal fasteners used in a mechanical based environment.
  4. Given a task at hand, describe considerations to be used in the selection of power tools
  5. Demonstrate knowledge regarding the safe use of power tools (from an electrical safety as well as ‘use of tool’ perspective).

Course Topical Outline

Day 1 - Basic Hand Tools including:  Hammer Types, Standard and Specialized Wrenches, Screwdrivers, Pliers, Vises and Clamps, Punches, Chisels, Snips & Shears, Hacksaws, Files, Taps & Dies, Rules & Tapes, Simple Calipers, Torque Wrenches. Day 2 - Electric, Pneumatic and Hydraulic Tools including:  power tool safety, electrical safety and the use of these tools: Portable Power Grinders, Power Saws, Power Snips, Impact Wrenches, Pipe Threading Machines, Portable Drills, and Drill Presses. Should you have a special task / application, ask the instructor.  The instructor typically has many years’ experience and can likely help.
